Renowned Kollywood director KS Gopala Krishnan, who had directed the films like Karpagam, Sarada and Kulama Gunama, died aged 86 at a private hospital in Chennai on 14 November 2015.
Gopala Krishnan had worked with many movie legends in Tamil cinema like Gemini Ganesan, Sivaji Ganesan and Jayalalithaa. Most of his films are women-centric, and he took a megaphone in more than 50 films in Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi films. Apart from the direction he is also a popular writer and lyricist.
Gopala Krishnan was the lyricist for the classic Tamil song 'Un Azhagai Kanniyarkal Sonnathinaley’ from the film Uthamaputhiram shows his caliber as a lyric writer. Films like ‘Per Sollum Annai', ‘Padikkadha Medhai’ and ‘Annai’ has brought him good reviews as a dialogue writer.
Gopala Krishnan was conferred with the title 'Tirupugal Isai Arasu' as he was apparently good at singing the Tirupugal of Arunagirinathar. He was also given the Kalaimamani award in 1985 by the Tamil Nadu Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram for his excellence in the field of Tamil cinema.
His film Kai Kodutha Dheivam starring Sivaji Ganesan, S. S. Rajendran, Savithri and K. R. Vijaya has won him the President’s Award in 1964 while his films Sarada and Karpagam won him the Certificate of Merit. Kaviya Thalaivan was his last film he directed.
